2019 Writing Goals

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending a webinar in which Brenda Jackson, an honorary member of my sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, and best selling romance author was the keynote speaker. She dropped so many nuggets in the 1 1/2 hours that she spoke to us budding authors but the most penetrating thing for me was that of the 127 books she’s written over her career that she wrote 50 of them while working a demanding full time job and raising a family.

Translation? “Quit playing and stop making excuses!”

If Mrs. Jackson could write that many books over a span of 15-20 years, I can certainly finish my 3rd novel in 2019 while in grad school, working a full-time, non-demanding job, and raising my 14-yr old son. However, there’s only one way that can happen.

Gotta have a plan. Here’s a snippet of mine.

  1. Set a weekly schedule that includes writing time,
  2. Stick to above plan.
  3. Don’t allow others to determine where I need to be and when.
  4. Don’t commit to unnecessary responsibilities.
  5. Pre-determine which social activities to attend and which to decline.
  6. Let go of FOMO (fear of missing out) syndrome,

My first semester in grad school this semester taught me that I can make time for anything. Seeing that my writing career is more important to me than obtaining a 2nd masters, I see the manifestation of this writing goal in 2019.
